Webster Word
Congregational Meeting Summary
April 27, 2008
The Congregation of Webster Church met on Sunday, April 27, 2008 to discuss the issue of children who are not confirmed taking communion. A study was conducted prior to the meeting by a special committee to research the communion issue. Woody Hower, chair of the committee, reported that a poll was taken of members of good standing. The result was that 41 were in favor of children taking communion before confirmation and 7 were opposed.
Most of the committee members felt that children should be baptized before taking communion; It was the parents decision whether or not their child takes communion before confirmation; A class about communion would be offered to younger children and their parents; Younger children would be accompanied to the rail by their parents; and Communion will be before the children go downstairs so communion will be available to all, adults and children.
After discussion by those for and against the issue, the motion to vote was called by Gary Lyttle and second by Woody Hower. The results of the vote were: 20votes for - Children may take communion prior to confirmation and 12 votes for - Children may NOT take communion prior to confirmation.
